single review: Utada Hikaru “Time”

Second up in the “BAD Mode” review set is “Time“, released more than a year after “Face My Fears”. This single was released as a digital single in 2020, mere months following the onset of the pandemic, and it has Hikki exploring uncharted territory by offering a theme song for a drama aired on NTV in Japan (the drama being “Bishoku Tantei Akechi Goro”).

With all the time in between releases, was this single crafted with care and precision, using all that time wisely, or did Hikki waste time for everyone, from those involved to the listener? Let’s look at the sole song onward.

Released: 2020/05/08

Utada Hikaru promoting Time

Time” just slaps. Wow.

Initially, I wasn’t sure what to think with its quiet introductory melody, but then that drum beat and snap hit so nicely, it was basically over from there. “Time” has a groove that’s very subtle, an air of subdued funk that grows over time; it feels fresh, but yet, it almost feels like it harks back to a lot of their previous releases prior to their hiatus (and that’s, frankly, a good thing, especially considering some of their recent releases haven’t hit the mark for me).

The chorus is joined by a synth that adds to the funk throughout. The formula then continues for the majority of the song, but it isn’t without a smooth interlude that will have you jamming along to its melody. This isn’t ‘Uptown Funk’, just for the record; this feels more psychedelic, a lot more digestible than a party jam, and if this is an indicator for what I’m hoping ‘BAD Mode’ will be like, then count my time in.

There’s not really much more to say apart from what I’ve mentioned in its review, but “Time” is a single y’all need to check. It definitely is worth your time, so don’t feel like you’re wasted… unless it isn’t your cup of tea; but hey, I won’t judge… maybe.

I’m giving this a definite recommend. Enough said.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
