single review: Morning Musume. “SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze ni Yorisotte~”

Bet you thought there wouldn’t be another series to throw into the mix, but nope, I’m doing it now!

This time, I’ll be looking at a set of singles up to the release of an album known as “SEXY 8 BEAT”, from my ult-group and Japan’s mega pop-sensation Morning Musume., and more specifically, the set of girls that feature their 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th generation (and for later reviews, their 8th and 8.5th).

The first single in the batch is the springtime single “SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze ni Yorisotte~“, which oddly enough was a background track for the 2008 movie Jumper, and it also happens to be one of the very first songs I’ve heard from the Hello! Project umbrella. So, this begs to ask: Was I nestled by the breeze of this ‘sexy’ track or was it to risky for a ‘sexy boy’ like me (ugh)? Let’s look!

SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze ni Yorisotte~
Translation: SEXY BOY ~Nestled by the Breeze~

Rating: 5 out of 5.

From beginning to end, top to bottom, start to finish, “SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze ni Yorisotte~” never lets up.

It’s that song, filled with so much gusto and so much fun that you’re never bored. You already know – I absolutely adore this song. It is what got me into Morning Musume. in the first place, if you didn’t already catch it in the intro. And to this day, it still remains a heartfelt piece of my Hello! Project adoration, and it never fails to be as fun as ever. It’s completely driven by a fast and booming idol-pop beat that merges electric guitar and whistles but yet somehow manages to sound like the fluttering of leaves through the wind.

It feels so thematic with its release date and its lyrics, and the girls, all still sounding as cute and idol-pop as ever, deliver it with power, you can’t help but chant and sing along with them. I feel like a sexy boy after listening to this.

Chance Chance Boogie” is the B-side to the single, and it is a fun jam!

It certainly sounds like it is more for kids than it is for anyone of my age (but hey, idol culture… begs to differ). Anyway, that’s besides the point, because regardless of whether or not that’s the intended audience, “Chance Chance Boogie” is actually quite the upbeat fun track.

Built on a jazzy instrumental, the girls cutely chant and sing overtop to give us a danceable effort that will have you swinging from all corners of the room. In addition, there’s fun elements like “shoobadoo” piece that will have you thinking that’s where Michishige got it from. It’s a short song, so it never overstays its welcome; it’s definitely worth a check, especially if you’re in need of a pick-me-up.

OVERVIEW

A fantastic effort from my ult-group, for sure!

I’m giving “SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze ni Yorisotte~” a definite recommend, and it’s mostly because I want more people to discover the amazingness that is its title track and how, you too, can find fun in idol pop music. It’s definitely worth a listen during the springtime days, when you yourself can experience the nestling of the breeze on your body. That’s how it feels listening to this, despite its speed.

In addition, it’s got a pretty fun B-side worth checking out!

Can’t say I feel all too ‘sexy’ after listening to this, but if they want me to be their sexy boy, then sure, I’ll take it. (lol)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
