single review: Tommy heavenly6 “Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl”

Are you ready to say trick or treat?

It’s Halloween! Woo! Spooky day. It’s also the big day for the Tommy series! The third single in the promotion of her second album, Heavy Starry Heavenly, ‘Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl’ is the actual Halloween single, with promotional art, its music video, and the track itself being all forms related to Halloween. If you thought she was Halloween from her previous efforts a la ‘I’m Gonna SCREAM+’ and ‘Pray’, you haven’t come across this.

It’s a creepy night, but here’s hoping we’ve got some good music by the lollipop candy bad girl herself to comfort us. Let’s check it out… enter if you dare…

Get out of here, stay at home, you know, sleep, go to bed… whatever I just heard… Tommy warns us in “Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl“, a song that runs itself in the length of 10:31 (yes, October 31 if you’re not hocus focused). The track is structured as kind of a story, built with pieces that incorporate both Tommy personas (yes, even february6 is here). You’ve got parts that involve a ‘pumpkin march’ with spooky twinkles, accordion tricks for haunted house glory, and… multiple heavy punk rock segments to let you know this is still a Tommy heavenly6 song. It is a LONG song, so it isn’t for those who want a mindless quick listen (or if you’re just not a Halloween person), BUT if you’re up for a frightening journey much like a haunted house tour, this is a pretty stellar ride. Every element is fun in its own way. Tommy, you bad girl, this whole song is sweet like lollipop candy and what a treat it is.

Now, if you wanted JUST a Tommy heavenly6 song with no strange or mysterious interludes, or any fun really, there IS a short version: “Lollipop Candy♥BAD♥girl (Short Version)“. It runs at almost over half the length of the original track, at around 5:52, so it is STILL a long song (if you want anything shorter, just listen to the album version…), but it is entirely the Tommy heavenly6 portions that focus on the heavy punk rock sound. I love these parts on their own, so to have them connected is really cool. It’s heavy duty, where the instrumental goes as hard as ever, and Tommy’s vocals fit the anger that needs to be portrayed with the melody. It’s a short version, yes, but one you can still sink your fangs into.

Probably one of my favorite singles from Tommy overall. I love it. When I came across this single when I was younger, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s fantastic.

Both versions are worth total listens, and this is a single you should play every year, at least during the Halloween season. Another great effort from Kawase Tomoko, and it makes a fine addition to her second album as Tommy heavenly6. Give this single a frightening shot, and you won’t regret it. It doesn’t bite… or so I think.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
