single review: Tommy heavenly6 “Pray”

Second up on the artist spotlight series for Tommy heavenly6 is the second single from her second album, Heavy Starry Heavenly, which Gintama fans may be very familiar with!

Pray is the title of the next single, tied-in with popular anime series Gintama as its very first anime opening in 2006. It continues on the Halloween theme that many of the singles from Heavy Starry Heavenly follow, but this time opting for a more humorous vibe but with some ghostly samurais!

Pray is one of Tommy’s well-known singles, but is this prayer worth chanting with or is it just going to be left unanswered? Click on to read more…

Pray” is, right off the bat, my go-to Tommy heavenly6 song. You can’t go wrong with that opening riff, the catchy la-las, or that incredible ‘Let’s go out, open my mind’ intro line. ‘Pray’ is that song, heavy on the punk rock feel, its overall hard-rock instrumental going as fast as possible throughout. In the chorus, Tommy delivers, hitting those notes and going hard to really indicate what this song is about. It’s quick, it’s powerful, it’s got a much more fun edge that I was wishing for with ‘I’m Gonna SCREAM+’. ‘Pray’ is the answer to my prayers, and it also makes a fantastic first opening (seriously, check it out, it’s one of my faves).

Crediting the folks at J-Music Italia for having the only available PV video around!

ABOUT U” is the original B-side of the single, and it takes the tone of ‘Pray’ down a few notches BUT upon listening to it thoroughly, it has a great feel to it, almost nostalgic. The song begins with a riff, drum, and vocal combo that has mellow written all over it before we are thrown into what could only sound like every pop-punk track of the 00s (which is a good thing). The riff is heavier part-way through, adding to the appeal. It follows the same formula throughout, but I don’t find myself totally bored of it. There’s really nothing ‘about’ this song that turns me completely off, and I might listen to this moreso upon first listen!

Lastly, much like the single prior, “Lost my pieces (Melancholic Guitar Version)” is a more acoustic-like, slowed-down, and slightly darker version of the original track. I have to admit, I don’t actually have any idea how the original track sounds like, but listening to this one, there’s a great sombre feel, and it has the right elements to declare itself melancholy. I don’t think I’ll be listening to this track too much, but if this version is any indication of what ‘Lost my pieces’ sounds like, count me interested. I might not be lost in my feelings with this song, but it’s still worth a check.

Another great single from Tommy! It looks like my prayers were answered.

Definitely give the title track a listen – it’s so fun, and it’s a track I always find myself going back to when I need a fast and heavy pick-me-up. The B-sides are both worth listens, if not at least once for trial, but I think ‘ABOUT U’ holds itself higher than the melancholic version of ‘Lost my pieces’. Regardless, another fun release from Tommy; next up is THE Halloween single of the series, and you’ll see why it absolutely IS Halloween.
